Commission Calculator

For Solar Pros

INTRODUCTION

When Solar Pros approached me with their commission calculator, it was clear the tool wasn’t meeting its potential. The calculator, intended to motivate and assist their team, was instead a source of stress. Its harsh black-and-red color scheme made every screen look like an error message, and the lack of intuitive features discouraged users from engaging with it. This project became an opportunity to reimagine the experience, transforming it into a tool that was not only functional but also enjoyable and motivating.

Redesign the Commission Calculator focusing on the UI, including branding, usability, and prototyping.

PROJECT GOALS

To create an approachable and engaging experience by introducing a calming and visually appealing color palette, simplifying navigation for better usability, and incorporating gamification to inspire users to track progress and aim for higher commissions.

THE PROBLEM

Solar Pros faced a significant challenge: their commission calculator was frustrating to use, with a harsh black-and-red color scheme that resembled error messages. Users avoided it due to its stressful and unmotivating design. The app was also built on a no-code software which decided to up their monthly pricing in 2025 forcing them to build a custom version to save money.

Research

As a contractor, I knew I needed to talk to the stakeholders of the project who could provide me with the info I needed to make sound design decisions. Due to time constraints, the CEO asked me to focus mostly on the UI and not as much on the UX.

Research into similar tools revealed an opportunity to introduce energy and personality into the redesign.
